D.C. & Plan B
With tensions on the pro-life vs. pro-choice political debate increasing, how do both sides feel about emergency contraception? Commonly known as the morning after pill, the medication is over-the-counter and prevents the sperm from implanting onto the egg, while delaying ovulation. This package interviews Maddy Nizolek, the President of Foggy Bottom Plan B, Aleia Mays, a Director of Education for Planned Parenthood of Metropolitan Washington, and Father John Benson of The Cathedral of St. Matthew.
Centering Community
In April 2023, the Anacostia Community Museum created the Center for Environmental Justice, an exhibit dedicated to showing the environmental successes and wishes in Ward 8. The Center highlights community voices, showcasing the reality of its citizens’ true work. Lisa McClure, associate director, explains the focus of justice in four areas – where we work, play, pray and live. Dennis Chestnut, a community member involved in environmental activism, further defines how the Center meaningfully serves Anacostia and helps to preserve its history.
Plateonomics
Plateonomics is a podcast dedicated to fighting food insecurity in the DMV. This week’s episode discusses the impact of Francis on The Hill on the Columbia Heights and Mount Pleasant communities – neighborhoods with an influx of migrants who were stuck at the border and sent in buses from Texas by Governor Greg Abott. The organization distributes groceries to those in need on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and they’re always looking for volunteers to pack and hand out the bags. Sitting down with East Coast Director Jay Steptoe and Outreach Coordinator Charlotte West, we learn about how and why Francis on The Hill is able to distribute groceries, diapers and donations to anyone in need, and the other niches they have been able to fill.
